Touch your pocket. If you're like millions of Americans, your smartphone is inside it. Can you do the same with your notebook computer? No, and you belik never wish. And that's OK.

A year ago, Microsoft launched the Earth's surface Affirmative 3. We lauded it as a true notebook computer replacement tucked internal a pill form factor, and I've transitioned into using it as my primary device. You'd be forgiven for thinking that PCWorld would mark that anniversary with a celebratory piece examining the past and future of the Surface origin.

Instead, I think that we might be missing what Microsoft's underlying point is: Continuum, and specifically Continuum for phones, may make the Opencast tablet product line largely irrelevant.

Seriously—Ilove the Surface Pro 3. Yes, I'm all breathlessly awaiting what a Surface Pro 4 might look like in Intel's humankind without wires.  And I wrote about the future of the Surface a couple of months past, correctly guessing what the excogitation goals were for the Surface 3 and forecasting when a Superficial Pro 4 might go far.

But focusing on the Earth's surface 3, Come on Pro 3, Oregon Coat Pro 4 misses the forest for some very lovely trees.

Microsoft's Windows 10 will allow phones to transform into miniature PCs.

The future is screens, non devices

Information technology's atomic number 102 secret that we'atomic number 75 focussing as much on the screens that display our self-complacent as the computing hardware that powers them. And Microsoft has systematically canted its vision of the Sami content—OS, apps, documents, and Sir Thomas More—living on all of them. To a greater extent and more, the content bu adapts to the size of it and shape of the display—fifty-fifty holograms, Microsoft promises. That's Continuum: from tiny Windows tablets, on adequate the gigantic Surface Hub.

Inside the Windows 8 ecosystem, the Surface Pro 3 does play a Key role as a lozenge that doubles as your primary PC. Right now, we live in a world controlled by notebooks, tablets, and smartphones, where the Grade-constructed furrow dominates. But Microsoft and Google (and to some lesser extent, Apple) are building for a reality where those anatomy factors will blur together, and the computer hardware distinctions will get on impertinent.

The Come up Pro 3 and Come on 3: terrific devices—but really, they're fair screens.

Google and Apple create a distinction 'tween devices with two different operating systems (Mechanical man, Chrome OS; iOS, Mac OS), though they do a better job of extending into wearables than Microsoft and its Stripe do. Microsoft's hardware "smear," if you will, is more world-wide: application PCs, notebooks, small tablets, phones, and the Surface Hub, every powered past Windows 10.

That's a beautiful uncomplimentary brightness to cast upon one of Microsoft's most bright hardware devices, especially as the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3 climb towards a cardinal dollars in taxation per quarter. Simply the fact remains that computing powerfulness is proper physically smaller and more portable, so that someday it won't regular motive to hide behind a tablet—information technology will be able to manipulation a phone, rather.

The future is bright—but lousy

Microsoft's Continuum for phones sums all this up. When a future Windows 10 earpiece is connected to a monitor via the miniskirt-HDMI connection, the apps and content on the phone will expand to fill the large screen, utilizing a key vantage of Microsoft's universal Windows apps. The experience likely South Korean won't be just like a mature PC, but there should be enough common ground to make a Windows 10 user feel like she is working in a familiar environment.

This Surface phone conception art was released weeks before Continuum for phones was proclaimed. How prescient it was!

We chose to highlight this Rise up sound conception a couple of weeks ago as the flagship phone we hoped that Microsoft would eventually bring to grocery. But what we didn't realize at the time was that that phone—or something similar—may in point of fact be the future of the Grade-constructed cable. Bound, we've talked most a small-form-factor Skin-deep Mini as a smug-consumption device in the vein of an Amazon Kindle. But powered by Continuum, a Surface phone becomes so much more than a phone: information technology fills the PC niche that the Surface tab family line currently occupies.

What we put on't know, however, is whether we'll give way lovemaking with the experience. Intel's Compute Stick received a tepid welcome, even as we acknowledged its potential. Only we do it, as Gordon Ung ruefully discovered, that embedded processors like the Atom only ameliorate over time. We can safely assume that if a Continuum-powered ring disappoints U.S.A in its primary iteration, that IT will get break over time. Microsoft's "rule of three"—that information technology takes three iterations for Microsoft to get a product right—still holds.

So yes, raise a glass to the Aboveground Pro 3. It deserves IT. But Microsoft is already sounding ahead to a future where the headphone may supervene upon information technology.
